WATER, SANITATION AND IRRIGATION CABINET SECRETARY ERIC MUGAA INSPECTION OF THE GALANA KULALU FOOD SECURITY PROJECT IN KILIFI AND TANA RIVER COUNTIES.

Today, Water, Sanitation and Irrigation Cabinet Secretary Eric Mugaa inspected the Galana Kulalu Food Security Project in Kilifi and Tana River counties.

He was accompanied by Principal Secretary for Irrigation CPA Ephantus Kimotho, CBS Irrigation Secretary Joel Tanui, and National Irrigation Authority (NIA) CEO Eng. Charles Muasya, MBS along with other government officials and representatives from the private investor.

The project is making impressive progress. The Galana Bridge is 50% complete and will improve access for delivering farm inputs.

New water infrastructure is also in place, including a 20,000 cubic meter intake well, a 2-kilometer lined canal, a 550,000 cubic meter reservoir, and a 20,000 cubic meter offtake sump. These facilities are currently being used to irrigate seed maize.

The private partner, Selu Limited, has planted 1,060 acres using 9 center pivots and plans to expand to 1,500 acres in the next three weeks. By the end of the year, a total of 3,200 acres will be cropped. The first crop was planted in May and is expected to mature in early October.

The Galana Kulalu project is on track to become a food hub for Kenya, supporting the government’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BeTA). The National Irrigation Authority is committed to its success.
