MWEA IRRIGATION SCHEME CONDUCTING THE IRRIGATION WATER USERS ASSOCIATION (IWUA) ELECTIONS

The Mwea Irrigation Scheme is conducting the Irrigation Water Users Association (IWUA) elections today, 17 February 2026, under the supervision of Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC). The National Irrigation Authority (NIA) is supporting them in terms of logistics to ensure a smooth farmers election of Line and Unit Leaders.

This morning, security personnel were deployed across the polling areas and IEBC poll officers were dispatched with election materials to ensure a smooth, transparent and secure voting process. Polling is taking place in Thiba, Mwea, Kiamanyeki, Curukia, Ndekia, Tebere, Wamumu and Karaba Units.

Voting commenced at 8:00 a.m. and will conclude at 2:00 p.m., with 18,423 farmer’s/ water users participating in the selection of their 80 Unit leaders and 380 Line leaders to enhance participatory water governance, accountability and efficient irrigation management.

The IWUA elections align with Kenya Vision 2030 and the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA) by strengthening farmer-led governance structures, improving irrigation service delivery and promoting sustainable agricultural productivity and food security.
