The Women Rep. Tana River County, Hon. Amina Dika accompanied by the Member of Parliament, Bura Constituency, Hon. Kuno Yakub Adow, and National Irrigation Authority management led by DGM Operations Joel Tanui and DMG- Infrastructure Eng. Loise Kahiga visited irrigation projects in Tana River County on May 25, and 26, 2023 to inspect the ongoing cropping activities.
Among the projects visited were Bura Irrigation Development Project- Korakora Gravity Canal, a flagship project towards the supply of gravity water to Bura Irrigation Scheme. The project is 60% complete and it is expected to be completed by December 2023. The project will ensure the irrigation of more than 25,000 acres in Bura.
The team also visited Tana Irrigation Scheme accompanied by the County Commissioner, Bejah M’mbesta, to address farmers and stakeholders and assess production progress in the scheme. The Authority’s Management is working on the solarization of Tana Irrigation Scheme to ensure the scheme’s sustainability through water abstraction by solar pumps. This will save the scheme and the farmers the high cost of diesel pumps currently in place.
The team was pleased with the work done and committed to continue supporting farmers for optimal production from their farms.
The National Irrigation Authority continues to work towards achieving food security and nutrition in Kenya in line with the Bottom-up Economic Transformation Agenda (BeTA).
