The CS Commissions Upper Gitwe Irrigation Project
The CS Ministry of Water, Sanitation and Irrigation Sicily K. Kariuki (Mrs), E.G.H commissioned Upper Gitwe Irrigation Project on October 15, 2021. She was accompanied by National Irrigation Authority chairman Hon. Eng Joshua Toro, Nyandarua County Commissioner Benson Leparmorijo, area MP and other senior government officials.
Upper Gitwe Irrigation Project in Kinangop Sub- County, Nyandarua County has an acreage of 200 acres and is expected to benefit 260 household farmers and 1,000 indirect beneficiaries. High value commercial vegetables are the main crops to be grown in the region.
The project is 96% complete and consists of one pump house, solar pumping unit for 28 ltr/sec, solar panels, storage tank(225m3), rising mains 1.8km and distribution lines.
The expected income is kshs 90,000 per acre annually and therefore the project is expected to pay back within 1.5 years. The CS was pleased with the implementation of the project. She notified the farmers that the Authority will train them on the best farming practices so that they can fully benefit from the project as the government continues to implement projects meant to realize the Big 4.
