Today the County Commissioner Embu County Mr. Abdulahi Galgalo accompanied by Irrigation Secretary Mr. Aboud Moeva and Mr. Nderi Ndiani from the CS office, Ministry of Water, Sanitation and Irrigation, flagged off 10,000 Hass Avocado seedlings to be distributed for planting in Embu County.
Since inception of the initiative in 2018, a total of 4.7 million seedlings are being raised by the National Irrigation Authority in four schemes namely: Mwea, Perkerra, Ahero and Bura. The beneficiaries will include women and youth groups as identified by the County Commissioners in conjunction with their respective CECs.
This initiative will go a long way in increasing catchment conservation and increase the income of the farmers. Upon maturity of the 800,000 fruit trees, it is expected that the fruits produced will have an estimated value of about KES 7 billion per year.
Alongside the distribution of the Hass avocado seedlings, the CS also sent Mr. Abdulahi Galgalo with a donation of food stuff and face masks to the Muslims in Embu town to boost them as they near the close of their fasting. The County Commissioner reminded the residents to follow the directives given by the Ministry of health and to always remember to keep social distance and wear a face mask.
