The PS, State Department of Irrigation, Prof. Fred Segor joined NIA Board of Directors in Galana Kulalu on August 6, 2019 to assess the state and progress of the project. The Board of Directors had earlier been in Njukini Irrigation Project on August 5, 2019 for an induction tour.

The PS assured Kenyans that Galana Kulalu is not a failure as talks between NIA and the contractor are ongoing. Meanwhile NIA continues with cropping activities on site using equipment installed by the contractor and is currently doing the third crop. 1,500 acres are under maize production which is one month away from harvesting. NIA expects to harvest thirty 90-kg bags of maize per acre. The cost of production will be determined after the harvest in order to ensure all factors involved in the production have been captured.

NIA is also doing legumes and pasture on 80 and 100 acres of land respectively. It targets to put 200 acres of land on legume production and 300 acres on pasture production. In addition, it targets to do a trial for cotton on 500 acres of land and has already achieved 300 acres.
In Njukini, NIA has rehabilitated the irrigation project putting 347 acres of land under irrigation thereby benefitting 700 households.

NIA remains committed to steering the country towards achieving the Big 4 Agenda on Food Security and Nutrition.
