NATIONAL IRRIGATION AUTHORITY JOINS PS CPA EPHANTUS KIMOTHO, CBS FOR A TREE PLANTING EXERCISE IN OLOOLUA FOREST, NGONG, KAJIADO COUNTY

The National Irrigation Authority (NIA) staff led by Director Irrigation Management Services, Eng. Jairus Serede who was representing the CEO joined the Principal Secretary, State Department for Irrigation, CPA Ephantus Kimotho, CBS, for a tree planting exercise in Oloolua Forest, Ngong Kajiado County as part of the Government’s ambitious plan of growing 15 Billion Tree by 2032.

The exercise marks a key step in the phased restoration of Ngong Forest beginning with the Oloolua Forest Block widely known as the “Green Lungs of Nairobi” which has faced significant degradation due to human activities.

This initiative reflects the Whole-of-Government and Whole-of-Society approach aimed at increasing Kenya’s tree cover to over 30%, restoring 10.6 million hectares of degraded landscapes, and strengthening climate resilience across the country.

In addition, the Authority donated 2,000 avocado seedlings which were flagged off during the event for distribution to schools, supporting environmental conservation efforts while promoting nutrition and sustainable livelihoods among young learners and surrounding communities.

Beyond environmental restoration, the initiative also seeks to promote sustainable livelihoods for forest adjacent communities while safeguarding biodiversity for future generations.

This effort aligns with Kenya’s Vision 2030 development agenda and the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), reinforcing the government’s commitment to environmental sustainability, climate action, and inclusive economic growth.
