MINISTRY OF AGRICULTURE RICE PROMOTION UNIT, STATE DEPARTMENT OF IRRIGATION AND (CADPERP) PROJECT TEAM CALL TO NATIONAL IRRIGATION AUTHORITY.

On August 1, 2024, a team from the Ministry of Agriculture Rice Promotion Unit, State Department of Irrigation and Capacity Development Project for Enhancement of Rice Production in Irrigation Schemes in Kenya (CaDPERP) project led by Mr. Ndede Elizaphan, Country Program Manager of JICA paid a courtesy call to the National Irrigation Authority. They were received by NIA Chief Executive Officer, Eng. Charles Muasya, MBS and the Authority’s Management team.

During the meeting, the team provided an update of the upcoming launch of CaDPERP’s second phase in Western Kenya. CaDPERP which started in 2019, supports rice production in Mwea and is now expanding to Western Kenya Schemes (Ahero and West Kano) along Lake Victoria.

The project aims to boost domestic paddy production, strengthen the rice value chain, and promote food security in line with Vision 2030, MTP IV, and the Bottom-up Economic Transformation Agenda.

The project overall goal is to ensure the domestic distribution of paddy produced in and around Western Kenya and Mwea Irrigation Schemes is increased through enhancement of production and productivity of paddy and strengthening the domestic value chain.

The project outputs include strengthening the capacity linkages among rice value chain actors, recommended rice varieties are proposed taking into account the marketing strategies and agro-ecosystems of the area, rice cultivation and post-harvest techniques introduced by RiceMAPP and CaDPERP are disseminated in the areas and capacity building to improve irrigation water use efficiency is developed through water management activities in the area.
