Water Storage For Irrigation- Large Dams

Under the Authority’s Strategic Plan (2019-2023), Sustainable Irrigation Water Harvesting and Storage by construction of pans and dams was one of the activities targeted to be implemented. In line with this, the Authority identified and prioritized construction of the following dams targeting to put an aditional 134,500 acres under irrigation.

1. Thiba Dam Kirinyaga County 35,000 acres – The progress of the works as at March 2022 was 95%.
The works done in ICB Package 1 include: River diversion of Cofferdam, main Dam, Spillway, Outlet works, Sand trap dam, Measuring instruments, Hydro-Mechanical works, Electrical works, Road works, Improvement/protection works, Building works, Engineer’s buildings and offices and Contractor’s Camp.- The works done in ICB Package 2 include: Civil works; Construction of drainage canals and their related structures, Construction of road network including connection roads and their related structures, Construction of Kathiga Bridge and Building Works; Construction of a permanent Engineer’s site office and Construction of permanent houses, i.e. five guest houses, a dormitory, a generator house and a guard house
2. Thuci Dam Embu County 17,000 acres – Awaiting cabinet approval and clearance by the Attorney General and the National Treasury
3. Rwabura and Thiririka Kiambu 5,000 acres – Awaiting cabinet approval and clearance by the Attorney General and the National Treasury
6. Kyakivai and Kaiti/Ngomano dams Makueni 10,000 acres – Awaiting cabinet approval and clearance by the Attorney General and the National Treasury
7. Gogo Dam Migori County 67,500 acres – Awaiting cabinet approval and clearance by the Attorney General and the National Treasury
