INSPECTION TOUR OF MULWAPER IRRIGATION PROJECT


The National Irrigation Authority (NIA) today hosted the Cabinet Secretary for Water, Sanitation and Irrigation Eng. Eric Mugaa and Principal Secretary, State Department for Irrigation CPA Ephantus Kimotho for an inspection tour of the Mulwaper Irrigation Project in Elgeyo Marakwet County. The delegation was joined by Area MP Hon. Kangogo Bowen.

They were briefed about the project by the Authority’s CEO Eng. Charles Muasya MBS, Board Chairman Eng. Gilbert Maluki and other Senior managers.

Project Overview

  • Location: Elgeyo Marakwet County, Marakwet East Constituency
  • Project Scope: Construction of a weir, self-cleaning sedimentation basin, conveyance pipeline, 250m³ storage tank, and various laterals and feeders
  • Expected Outcome: Irrigation of 300 acres, benefiting 1,000 households, and supporting the farming of cereals, pulses and horticulture

Progress and Timeline

  • Construction Start Date: June 2024
  • Current Completion Status: 48%
  • Expected Completion Date: December 2025

The Cabinet Secretary expressed satisfaction with the project’s progress and quality, pledging full support for its successful implementation. He emphasized the importance of maintaining high standards to enhance food security and agricultural productivity in the region.

This project demonstrates the Authority’s commitment to transforming agriculture through sustainable irrigation systems, aligning with Kenya’s development agenda.
