NIA BOOSTS FOOD SECURITY WITH STRATEGIC IRRIGATION PROJECTS IN NYERI COUNTY.


The National Irrigation Authority (NIA) is expanding irrigated agriculture in Nyeri County through several strategic irrigation projects. Today, the Authority hosted Cabinet Secretary for Water, Sanitation and Irrigation, Eng. Eric Mugaa, for an inspection tour of the Changachicha Irrigation Project in Othaya and the launch of the Hika Irrigation Project in Mathira.

Changachicha Irrigation Project is expected to boost food production, enhance water resource management and create new economic opportunities for approximately 1,600 households.

Hika Irrigation Project on the other hand will put 200 acres under irrigation, directly benefiting 400 households through cultivation of high-value commercial vegetables such as cabbages, kale, tomatoes, spinach and carrots.

The Cabinet Secretary was accompanied by senior government officials, including the Principal Secretary for Irrigation CPA Ephantus Kimotho, CBS, Nyeri County Commissioner and several Members of Parliament.

The Authority’s CEO, Eng. Charles Muasya, MBS, accompanied by the Board Chairman Eng. Gilbert Maluki, Farmers’ Representative in the Board of Directors, Mr. Simon Ngugi and other senior officials from the Authority, briefed the delegation on ongoing works, project milestones and anticipated socio-economic impact. The Cabinet Secretary pledged his full support for the successful implementation of the projects, emphasizing the importance of collaborative work.

These projects demonstrate the Authority’s commitment to transforming agriculture through sustainable irrigation systems. The NIA remains dedicated to partnering with national and county governments to scale up irrigation infrastructure, aligning with Kenya’s development agenda. By working together, the Authority aims to enhance food production, improve livelihoods and contribute to the country’s economic growth.
