Background

Western Kenya Rice Mills (WKRM) is a subsidiary of National Irrigation Authority (NIA) established in 1990, incorporated in 1993 but the construction started in 1991. In January 1992, the installation was completed and milling started in February 1, 1992. The company shareholding is; NIA 76.5%, Ahero Irrigation Scheme 11.7%, West Kano Irrigation Scheme 5.7% and Bunyala Irrigation Scheme 6.1%.

The construction of the WKRM was necessitated by the need to reduce the transport and other overhead expenses incurred by NIA, then NIB in transferring paddy to the then only referral rice mill in the country, Mwea Rice Mill in Kirinyaga County.

Construction was primarily done to receive, process and market paddy produced by the then three (3No.) NIA managed Western Kenya Schemes: Ahero, West Kano and Bunyala Schemes and other out grower farmers within the adjacent Schemes.
