Today the PS State Department for Irrigation, CPA Ephantus Kimotho, CBS accompanied by the Ag. Irrigation Secretary Eng. Vincent Kabuti, OGW visited Rwabura Irrigation Development Project to inspect its progress. Also present were the Gatundu South MP, Hon. Gabriel Gathuka Kagombe and Ndarugo ward MCA Hon. John Njinu Ndiba. They were received by the CEO, National Irrigation Authority, Eng. Charles Muasya, MBS, and other officials from the Authority.
Rwabura Irrigation Development Project is located in Kiambu County, Gatundu South constituency and draws its water from Rwabura and Thiririka rivers. The project is currently 97% complete and is set to cover about 1,500 acres benefitting approximately 3,000 farmers upon completion.
The proposed enterprises include horticultural crops such as cabbage, carrots, kales, and tomatoes among others and cash crops such as tea and coffee. This is projected to improve the socio-economic status of 22,500 beneficiaries by among others creating about 7,500 direct jobs and 15,000 indirect jobs, injecting 600 million in the farmers’ pockets, and enhancing food security and nutrition in the country. This is in line with the Bottom-up Economic Transformation Agenda.
Additionally, he issued irrigation kits to the project beneficiaries. The farmers are grateful for the project and the capacity building they have been receiving in preparation to utilize it efficiently.
The PS was happy with the progress of works and charged the farmers to ensure they utilize the project to its full potential to steer this country towards food security as well as raise its GDP.
The Authority continues to provide and coordinate sustainable development and management of irrigation services in the country with the aim of steering this country towards food security by ensuring every irrigable acre has water.
