THE PRESIDENT’S DELIVERY UNIT SECRETARY AND PUBLIC SERVICE COMMISSIONERS VISIT TO THIBA DAM
The President’s Delivery Unit Secretary Andrew Wakahiu, MBS, accompanied by Central Regional Commissioner Esther Maina and Public Service Commissioners Amb. Anthony Muchiri and Dr. Nancy Mwiandi, MBS inspected Thiba Dam in Kirinyaga County on June 10, 2022.
They were received by the National Irrigation Authority’s Deputy General Manager, Infrastructure and Irrigation Development Services Eng. Charles Muasya and other senior officers from the Authority and National Government Administration.
They were happy with the successful and timely completion of The Dam ahead of time and at less cost where a saving of Kshs. 400 million was realized.
They commended the Authority for the successful implementation of the project as beneficiaries are already utilizing water from the installed infrastructure for food production as envisioned.
Mr. Wakahiu stated that the project is economically transformative to the region and the country at large, and further thanked the community for their support and cooperation during the implementation of the project. He further affirmed that the dam will be opened soon by His Excellency the president.
Thiba Dam will put an additional 10,000 acres under irrigation in Mwea to make the scheme have a cumulative of 35,000 acres and introduce double cropping of 35, 000 acres resulting in having 70,000 acres under irrigation in a year. This will cause an increase in rice production from the current 114,000 metric tonnes to 200,000 metric tonnes.
As a result of the increase in area under Irrigation, Thiba Dam is also set to inject more income into the local economy from the current KSh. 10Billion to KSh. 16Billion annually and create an additional 100,000 jobs leading to a cumulative 350,000 jobs in a year.
